Notre région : le Limousin

The Limousin is a historic province of central France, in the north western part of the MASSIF CENTRAL. Limousin is called the « country of the tree and the water ». It posses a important and diversified nature patrimony. It’s a region of altitude with a succession of mountains and hills. The average altitude is 700m.
Rich pastures are also used for raising Limousin beef cattle, one of the leading breeds of Europe. Other traditionally famous products of the region are Aubusson tapestries and enamels and porcelains from LIMOGES, the historic capital and present regional center.

Notre ville : Uzerche

Our town, Uzerche, is a pretty little medieval town, called "la perle du Limousin" (the pearl of the Limousin).

Uzerche is situated at a height of 333 metres, on the creast of the rocky hill, surrounded by a narrow bend of our river, the Vezere. The site where Uzerche is built was already inhabitated during the roman period, which proves that Uzerche is a very old town. Like all the old towns in France, Uzerche has got a coat of arms : the 2 bulls remind us an old legend and the 3 flowers were added by king Charles V to remember his defence against the English in 1374. Uzerche has never been taken since it was built.

Our town is quite complete regarding the public buildings : there is a church, a school, a town hall, a swimming pool and a gymnasium, a cinema, a football and rugby stadium and tennis courts... There are sports clubs too such as archery, climbing, or canoeing which is practised on the river Vezere.

Notre école : le collège Gaucelm Faidit

Our school is called GAUCELM FAIDIT, one of the main Limousin toubadours (musician and poet) of the XIIth century. He left more than 80 poems (crusades songs, love songs...). Most of this poems are in the "occitan" language, but he wrote a few ones in old french. He met other troubadours and lords who were protectors of poets (especially Richard the Lionheart)... and went into the 3rd crusade.

The construction of our school, on a hill far away from the centre of the town, has been finished in 1977. Our school has been renewed a few years ago, and now it's all blue.

There are 295 pupils and 30 teachers. In our school, there is a hall and an office called "school life". The main building is for the administration and the lessons (mathematics, sciences, history and geography, foreign languages, french and latin, arts...). There is the school restaurant, a library and a computing room.

There is an other building for technology lessons and music.

In the last building, is the boarding (for 13 pupils who spend the whole week at school) and the surgery.
